InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula: Prices and the Catch

InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula: Prices and the Catch

There is one genuinely famous hotel in Da Nang, and it is not in Da Nang.

The InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula sits in a private bay called Bai Bac, out on the Son Tra peninsula. That is twenty-five minutes of winding coast road from the nearest bowl of noodles. It holds 4.9 stars from more than twelve thousand Google reviews.

Search its name and you get the brand's own site, its booking engine, four aggregators, a Wikipedia entry and a row of influencer reels.

What you do not get is anybody telling you whether you should book it.

So here is that. This guide is built from three things:

  • The newest Google reviews written in Vietnamese by domestic guests
  • The Guide Machine hotel database
  • Da Nang's own tourism plan for the peninsula

Nobody on our team has slept here, and it is worth saying that plainly. Every number below comes from a named source with the date it was read. Every quote carries its source, its date and, where it was translated, the language it was written in. Drive times are our own estimates from measured distances. Where we draw a conclusion, it is our reading of that evidence and we say so.

Last reviewed 28 September 2026 by the Meet Da Nang Editorial Team. The full method sits on our editorial standards page, and who writes this site explains why a guide carries the Editorial Team byline until our writer has read it herself.

Where is the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula, and why does the location decide everything?

The resort occupies Bai Bac, a north-facing bay at 16.12 north, 108.31 east. Guide Machine hotel data, refreshed 5 September 2026, puts it 13.38 km from Da Nang International Airport. The drive takes longer than that number suggests, because the last stretch climbs and turns.

Here is the thing nobody explains. The peninsula is almost empty of hotels on purpose.

Da Nang's official tourism plan sets out to develop Son Tra "into a national destination focused on high-end ecotourism linked with nature conservation and biodiversity". That wording is the Danang Tourism Promotion Center's, not ours.

Filter the Guide Machine database to the peninsula's bounding box, 16.085 to 16.14 north and 108.24 to 108.33 east, and ten properties come back. Only two of them sit above 16.10, out on the headland itself. The other eight cluster at the city end near the fishing port: Le Sands Oceanfront on 9.2 from 9,947 reviews, Sontra Sea Hotel on 9.0, SEASHORE on 8.9 from 4,699. Those are good city hotels on streets you can walk out of, which is precisely what the headland does not offer.

So the real choice is not "which Son Tra hotel". It is "do I want to be on the peninsula at all".

If the answer is no, our My Khe beachfront guide and the An Thuong guide cover the two areas most visitors should book instead. The area index sets all seven side by side.

What does the data say about the resort itself?

Guide Machine hotel data, refreshed 5 September 2026, from a single pass over 311 Da Nang properties:

  • Score 9.1 from 3,404 Agoda reviews, five stars
  • Newest review on file 29 August 2026
  • Price sample $522.50 for Saturday 10 October 2026

The category breakdown is where it gets interesting.

CategoryScoreWhat it means in practice
Cleanliness9.5One of its three joint-highest categories
Facilities9.5Pools, spa, private beach, Citron and the Long Bar on site
Staff9.5Vietnamese reviews name individual people, repeatedly
Room comfort9.3Held down by the lowest floor, see the catch below
Value for money8.9Second weakest, and the rate is why
Location8.7Its weakest score, on a resort sold on its setting

Read that last row again. On a property whose entire marketing rests on where it is, the thing guests rate lowest is where it is. That is not a contradiction. The setting is spectacular and the location is inconvenient, and those are two different sentences.

Now the price, which is the fastest-growing thing people search alongside this resort's name. Google's live rates, read off the search results on 28 September 2026, showed $456 a night direct with IHG for the Saturday night of 28 November 2026. A third party quoted $432 for the same night. One influencer reel on that same results page names $960 a night.

At about 25,900 VND to the dollar on 28 September 2026, $456 is roughly 11.8 million VND. The State Bank of Vietnam publishes the official reference rate. Note what those two dated samples have in common: 10 October and 28 November 2026 are both Saturdays. So $432 to $522.50 is a weekend band, and neither figure tells you what a midweek night costs.

This is the part the English-language web gets wrong.

We scraped the 150 newest Google reviews in Vietnamese-language mode on 28 September 2026. Of the 139 that carried text, 21 were written in Vietnamese.

Read them together and a pattern appears at once. Domestic guests rate this place on breakfast and on individual staff members by name. One member of the Citron restaurant team, Ly, is named in six of the twenty-one. Nhi Cao, at the Long Bar, in four.

Not one of the twenty-one mentions Bill Bensley, the architect the English-language results lead with. Not one mentions the funicular railway. Not one mentions the architecture, which is close to the only thing page one has to say about the place.

A guest on their fourth stay (Google Maps review, Vietnamese, translated, September 2026):

"I have come back several times now, this is the fourth, and I am still very happy with the quality of the service. The food and drink are all good for the family."

A guest on a five-day stay (Google Maps review, Vietnamese, translated, September 2026): "I stayed here five days and it was very comfortable. The check-in and the afternoon tea are well worth experiencing. Deserves to be called a six star resort in Vietnam."

A honeymoon couple (Google Maps review, Vietnamese, translated, September 2026): "Very good service. From the room to Nhi at Long Bar, who knew we were on honeymoon and gave us a lovely gift. We will come back because the experience was so good."

What that tells you is practical. If you are booking for the design, you are booking for the reason its most loyal guests do not care about. If you are booking for service and for long, slow breakfasts, the people who come back four times agree with you.

What is the honest catch?

There are three, and the first one is specific enough to act on.

The lowest floor is damp. Guide Machine hotel data, refreshed 5 September 2026, carries this on the property record. Lower floor rooms suffer from humidity and noise from the floors above, and that disrupts sleep.

A guest says the same thing in the first person (Agoda review on the Guide Machine record, 3 August 2026). An ocean view room on the lowest of three floors, damp enough that staff suggested a dehumidifier. The dehumidifier itself was noisy.

Ask which floor you are on before you pay.

You cannot leave easily, and that costs money. A guest called it "somewhat inconvenient that the resort was far from the amenities and restaurants" (Agoda review on the Guide Machine record, June 2025).

A guest at the neighbouring resort put the arithmetic plainly (Google Maps review, French, translated, September 2026). The quiet location far from the centre brings benefits and constraints. You are far from everything. So you are forced to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner in a resort restaurant.

Tripadvisor's review summary for this hotel, as it appeared in Google's results on 28 September 2026, calls the location remote and says dining costs are considered high. Budget for three restaurant meals a day, not one.

And the area's own catch applies to every address out here: nothing is walkable. You need a scooter, a driver, or a resort you never leave.

⚠ Warning
If a resort you cannot walk out of sounds like a problem rather than the point, book the city or the beachfront instead and visit the peninsula on a half-day trip. Our My Khe or An Thuong comparison is the faster way to choose between the two areas most people actually want.

How do you book around the damp rooms and the dining bill?

Two questions at the booking stage handle most of the first two catches. Get your floor written onto the reservation rather than sorted out at check in, and ask what a rate with meals included costs before you commit to room only.

The damp complaint is specific to the bottom storey of a three-storey building, so it is a room-assignment problem, not a building problem. Room assignment is negotiable while the resort still wants the booking and much less negotiable on the day you arrive. Put it in the booking notes and ask for confirmation back in writing.

The dining bill is harder to plan for. We could not find published menu prices for any of the resort's restaurants on 28 September 2026, so there is no honest per-head figure to hand you, only the direction the reviews point in. Ask whether a rate with breakfast or half board exists for your dates, then compare the totals rather than the nightly rates.

The third catch has no workaround. If walking out to dinner matters to you, the fix is a different area, not a different room.

Is the cheaper resort on the same peninsula worth it?

There is exactly one other real resort out on the headland: Son Tra Resort and Spa, about two kilometres down the coast at 16.106, 108.295.

ResortScores (reviews)The catch
InterContinental Danang Sun PeninsulaGuide Machine 9.1 (3,404), Google 4.9 (12,631)Damp lowest floor, high on-site dining, sample rate $522.50
Son Tra Resort and SpaGuide Machine 8.2 (1,482), Google 4.3 (1,027)Same remoteness, nearly a point lower on Guide Machine

Both resort names in that table link to Agoda. If you book through one we may earn a commission; it does not change the scores, which came out of the database before any link was added.

The gap is wide on both scales. Vietnamese guests still like the cheaper one, and for a specific reason.

One wrote (Google Maps review, Vietnamese, translated, April 2026): "Nice location. The resort is far from the city centre so it is very quiet. Good service." For that guest the remoteness was the reason to come.

The three-star French review quoted above was written about that property. At Son Tra Resort the captive dining bites harder, because nothing in the reviews we read points to the food as a reason to come.

Where do you eat if you do leave?

At the foot of the peninsula, on Van Don street, is the Tho Quang seafood wholesale market. It scores 4.3 from 359 Google reviews. We pulled its forty newest on 28 September 2026: sixteen carried text, and twelve of those sixteen were written in Vietnamese. Here is what they say.

A five-star review (Google Maps review, Vietnamese, translated, August 2026): "I went at 6:30am and there was still plenty of seafood. Much cheaper than the regular market, I bought a 4kg cobia." The same reviewer finishes: "It also stinks of waste water, they need to fix that."

A two-star review is blunter (Google Maps review, Vietnamese, translated, June 2026): "Dirty, a frightening smell. If you are buying a small amount to cook while visiting Da Nang this place is not suitable. Go to the afternoon market, there is plenty of fresh live seafood in the afternoon."

And a one-star review says simply (Google Maps review, French, translated, May 2026): "Foreigners not allowed in." Take that seriously. This is a working wholesale port, not a market built for visitors, and access is at the gate's discretion.

For seafood you can sit down and eat, our where locals eat in Da Nang guide covers the beachfront halls and the city streets that are open to everyone.

What does a day on the peninsula actually look like?

The peninsula's sights are close to the resort by road. Guide Machine hotel data, refreshed 5 September 2026, puts Son Tra Mountain at 3.74 km and Linh Ung Pagoda at 2.37 km. The Lady Buddha statue stands in the pagoda's grounds, though the same data plots it as a separate point at 3.95 km, so allow for the longer figure.

Go early. Son Tra's forest is the biodiversity the city's plan sets out to protect, and Vietnam's national tourism board describes those hillsides as "home to the endangered red-shanked douc langur". First light on a quiet road is a better shot at seeing one than mid-morning, once the tour traffic to the pagoda has built up. On the animals themselves, follow the CDC's guidance for Vietnam: do not touch or feed any animal you do not know, because bites and scratches can carry rabies.

Most guests do the peninsula as a half day and spend the rest of the time inside the resort. That is what a stay out here is, and the category scores agree: 9.5 for what is on site, 8.7 for where it sits.

Half-day Son Tra and Lady Buddha tours on GetYourGuide, another commission link. The catch: most start from the city, so from the resort you are usually better off hiring a car and driver for three hours.

Hoi An makes the other obvious day trip, south of the city and a longer run from Bai Bac than from any beachfront hotel, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage site in its own right.

When should you go?

Vietnam's national tourism board gives three windows. March to May and September to October are the best months. June to August brings little rain and a clear calm sea. The rainy season from November to February brings long rains and moody weather.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting publishes the live warnings during storm season.

For a north-facing bay on an exposed headland, that November to February window matters more than it does in the city. A resort you cannot leave is a different proposition in three days of heavy rain.

On health and vaccinations, the CDC's Vietnam traveller page is the current reference. Visas, eSIM, travel insurance and everything else that applies to Vietnam as a whole live on our sister site, Known by Locals, rather than being repeated here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula worth the price?

It depends on what you are buying. Guide Machine scores it 9.5 for cleanliness, facilities and staff, and 8.7 for location, its weakest category. If you want service and food and you are content to stay on site for most of your trip, the score supports the rate. If you want to walk out to dinner, you are paying a premium for the thing that will annoy you.

What do the reviews actually say?

Of the 150 newest Google reviews we read on 28 September 2026, 21 were in Vietnamese, and those 21 are overwhelmingly about breakfast at Citron, the Long Bar and named staff. Agoda guests corroborate the service scores and raise one repeated complaint: damp and noise in the lowest-floor rooms.

Where exactly is the resort?

Bai Bac bay on the north side of the Son Tra peninsula, at roughly 16.12 north, 108.31 east, about 13.38 km from Da Nang International Airport by Guide Machine's measurement. The airport drive takes longer than the distance suggests.

Is there a day pass?

The resort does not publish a public day pass, and we have not been able to confirm one exists. Treat any third-party listing offering day access as unverified and check directly with the resort before you travel.

Can you get married there?

Wedding sits among the most searched terms alongside this resort's name, so plenty of people are asking. The city is pushing in the same direction: the Danang Tourism Promotion Center's plan lists "gastronomic tourism, wellness tourism, and wedding tourism" among Da Nang's complementary products. The resort itself does not publish wedding prices or availability anywhere we can read, so this is one to ask them directly. We have no rate to quote you and will not invent one.

How far is it from the airport?

13.38 km according to Guide Machine hotel data, refreshed 5 September 2026. Budget closer to thirty minutes than to the fifteen the distance implies, and arrange the transfer through the resort if you land late.

Should most visitors to Da Nang stay here?

No. Most visitors want to be able to walk to dinner, and this resort is the opposite of that by design. It suits a honeymoon, an anniversary, or a stay where the resort is the destination. For a first trip to the city, the beachfront or the city centre is the better base, and you can still see the peninsula in a morning.
